Though This Side of the Moon's packaging highlights Elizabeth Cook's fashion-model looks, country music just doesn't get much more down-home than this. Cook's voice combines the trill of early Dolly Parton with the twang of a young Loretta Lynn, while her songwriting shows a disarming, conversational simplicity laced with a warm humor.
Such artistry renders the "alt" in "alt-country" meaningless, because the best of this timeless music seems to come from the same place and reflect the same values as the music of George Jones or Hank Williams. Whether admonishing "Cupid" for his bad aim, shuffling onto the honky-tonk dance floor with "Hard-Hearted," or finding romance on the harmony-laden title track, Cook's the real deal. --Don McLeese
