In 1992 Le Systeme Auditif Central. Anatomie et Physiologie was published in Paris. It was the only book of several recent treatises on the subject to present in a single volume the structure and function of the auditory system of mammals at a level suited for students as well as specialists in the field.
The present English edition of this volume is more than just a translation of the original. Each of the five chapters has been throughly revised by the authors and editors, if not completely rewritten to assimilate the latest research advancements. The objective is to offer a single comprehensive source of knowledge and reference on the central auditory system.
In chapters 2-5 the anatomy and physiology of sound processing in all parts of the central auditory system are presented, and, on that basis, the emergence of auditory functions is discussed. The first chapter is special, because it provides a concise oerview of the material detailed in the following chapters.
Thus the volume serves both the student or researcher "in a hurry", needing a quick reference, and the reader with more specialized and detailed interest in the subject.
