Some of the material covered is on classical subjects, such as thermochemistry, mineralogy, beneficiation, smelting, solidification, and sintering. Other newer subjects include film deposition, sulfur control, intelligent processing, composite fabrication, recycling, and nanotechnology. Thus the scope of the book covers the complete materials cycle (cradle to grave to cradle).

The author draws heavily on examples from published books and articles written by leaders in their fields, but with some examples from his research experience. As with any new textbook, engineers and scientists engaged in research or who want to broaden their backgrounds may like copies on their bookshelves.
